our services

At Square One Psychology, our approach to therapy is built on flexibility and precision.

We understand the science behind each evidence-based treatment—why it works and how to best tailor its components for your child’s unique needs.

Our expertise lies in blending these elements without strict labels or rigid frameworks, offering a treatment approach that adapts to each situation and empowers your child to thrive.

individual therapy

Our approach to child and adolescent therapy is active, engaging, and designed to spark real change. We help kids and teens understand how certain patterns and habits can keep them feeling stuck. By offering practical skills training, we teach them how to better work with their emotions, build motivation, and develop strategies to navigate challenges more effectively. It's all about creating the momentum they need to grow and succeed.

  • CBT helps children and adolescents understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and actions. It is an active, skills-based treatment that teaches kids how to challenge unhelpful thought patterns and practice opposite action strategies in order override their avoidant responses to intense emotions and effectively reduce their emotional distress.

  • ERP is a type of CBT that is exceptionally effective in treating children and adolescents with anxiety, OCD, or phobias. Through a series of incremental exposures, this treatment helps kids practice approaching anxiety-provoking situations, manage the uncomfortable feelings and thoughts associated with the exposure practice, and learn that they can break free from the cycles that maintain their anxiety.

  • DBT for Children (DBT-C) and DBT for Adolescents (DBT-A) were developed to address the treatment needs of youth presenting with emotional sensitivity, quick, intense emotional reactions, and behavioral hyper-reactivity that negatively impact day-to-day functioning. Treatment focuses on four core sets of skills: distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness. In the context of developmentally-appropriate and engaging activities, youth learn to balance their emotions with logic, handle challenging situations with greater flexibility, and improve their relationships with parents, siblings, and friends.

parent-based treatment

  • PCIT is a family-based treatment that addresses challenging behaviors in young children (ages 2 to 7) by supporting parents and caregivers in: more effectively guiding child behavior, reinforcing appropriate behavior with positive attention, setting consistent limits, and calmly following through with consequences. Treatment involves two didactic parent training sessions and a series of live-coaching sessions to provide parents and caregivers with in-the-moment-support as they practice effective strategies to reduce challenging behaviors they often see at home and in public settings.

  • PCIT-SM is an exposure-based behavioral treatment for children ages 2 and older with selective mutism (SM). By way of live-coaching and support, parents and caregivers learn key skills and strategies to help facilitate child emotion regulation and more effectively guide ‘brave talking’ exposures. In this way, parents learn to be their child’s ‘brave coach’ and help their child practice brave talking across more people, places, and activities. To help a child’s treatment gains generalize to the school setting, the clinician may also provide a teacher training, lead a series of brave talking exposures in your child’s classroom, and provide ongoing consultation to the school team to support progress over time.

  • PMT provides parents and caregivers with didactic training and support in implementing evidence-based skills and strategies to manage their child’s difficult behaviors. Children do not attend PMT sessions; rather, parents meet with the clinician to learn new parenting approaches, collaborate on how to effectively apply them to real-life situations, and troubleshoot implementation so that you have a parenting playbook that actually works for your family.

We believe parents are uniquely poised to be key agents of change in their child’s life. Parent-based treatment is designed to help empower parents with practical skills and strategies to support their child’s development. What’s more, you’ll learn targeted strategies to reinforce new behaviors and effectively navigate challenges, setting your child up for lasting success at home, in school, and beyond.
