WEEKLY BRAVE PRACTICE FOR CHILDREN (AGES 6 TO 9)

“OLDER KIDS” Group

Intentional practice. Real-life speaking moments. Confidence that carries over.

A Weekly Therapy Group Built for Brave Momentum

Our “Older Kids” Group is a 90-minute, in-person behavioral therapy group for elementary school children with selective mutism or social anxiety.

Each week, children practice speaking in settings that mirror real life — answering in class, joining peer conversations, sharing ideas in a group, and navigating social “oops” moments. Sessions are supportive and structured but the goals are serious: increased participation, more independent speech, and lasting social confidence.

Brave Steps We Practice Each week

Classroom Participation

Raising a hand. Responding out loud. Sharing an idea before the moment passes. Practicing clear, audible responses in group settings — even when it feels uncomfortable. Learning that speaking up gets easier with repetition, and that brave participation builds real confidence.

Confident Peer Conversation

Initiating, responding, and staying in the back-and-forth. Entering conversations instead of hovering on the edges. Asking and answering questions, repairing small missteps, and discovering that connection doesn’t require “perfect.”

Joining & Initiating Play

Moving towards peers instead of waiting to be invited. Practicing how to join games, make suggestions, and tolerate the uncertainty of social risk. Taking small, supported steps toward others — and seeing how approach builds momentum.

Flexible “oops” recovery

Missing a word. Speaking too quietly. Saying something awkward. Handling mistakes without shutting down. Learning that social missteps are manageable — and that recovery is a skill.

  • Each session blends whole-group speaking activities, peer-to-peer exposure tasks, and individualized goals woven into real-world scenarios.

Children practice answering in front of peers, joining conversations, presenting short ideas, and navigating social challenges in structured, supportive ways. Every activity is purposeful. Every child has a clear target.

  • A weekly group allows children to practice social risks consistently while building familiarity with peers. Over time, hesitation decreases, participation increases, and brave moments become more automatic.

  • Each child enters group with personalized speaking targets developed collaboratively with their family.

Goals are specific, measurable, and gradually expanded — whether that’s speaking above a whisper, initiating one peer interaction, or responding aloud in a group setting. Progress is tracked and adjusted as confidence grows.

  • Parents receive feedback between sessions so progress doesn’t stop at the door.

You’ll know what skills were practiced, where your child stretched, and how to support continued brave behavior between sessions.

  • This group is ideal for early elementary school children who:

    • Speak comfortably at home but struggle at school

    • Hesitate to initiate with peers

    • Whisper, freeze, or avoid speaking in groups

    • Are ready for structured, peer-based exposure practice

If your child is beginning to find their voice but needs help strengthening it in real-life settings, our “Older Kids” group may be a strong fit.
