Group Therapy

Real-life speaking practice. Peer connection. Brave progress.

Group therapy for selective mutism offers kids and teens a supportive space to practice brave talking, build comfort around peers, and take meaningful steps toward speaking more freely in life settings like school, extracurriculars, and social gatherings.

Each group combines evidence-based treatment with engaging, age-appropriate activities. Sessions are designed to help kids practice speaking in ways that feel manageable and not overwhelming. That includes things like responding to questions, joining group games, participating in class-like discussions, or interacting with peers in guided exchanges.

Each child has their own brave goals. Progress is tracked across participation, communication, and confidence.

  • Responding to peer and adult questions

  • Asking questions during structured activities

  • Speaking in front of small or large groups

  • Joining conversations or turn-taking games

  • Building flexibility and comfort in social settings

Our group intervention incorporates evidence-based approaches with engaging and relevant activities to help each child work towards their ‘next-level’ brave goals – responding to and asking questions, participating in small and large group activities, interacting with peers, presenting to a group, and more.

FAQs

  • In-person and telehealth services are available to residents of New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey.

  • No, our clinicians are out-of-network (OON) with insurance. However, we happily provide you with the appropriate paperwork for you to then submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

  • Treatment duration, frequency of sessions, and type of treatment is fully informed by your child’s diagnosis and symptom severity. We are strong proponents of providing children and families with the skills and support they need so that they no longer have to meet with us on a regular basis. To that end, our work with families is goal-directed and transparent to ensure that we are achieving those goals together in the most cost- and time-effective manner.

  • We look for signs that your child can tolerate being around peers, even if they’re not speaking yet. Each application is reviewed by a clinician to make sure the group is the right fit. We’ll walk you through it.

  • That’s okay. Brave talking happens gradually. We build each child’s comfort first, then move toward speaking goals in a way that feels manageable. Progress doesn’t always mean words on day one.

  • No, these are drop-off groups (for in-person) or child-only sessions (for virtual). Parents do receive regular updates and guidance to support progress at home and school.

  • Yes. Many children benefit from both. Group work offers different kinds of practice — especially for peer interactions and generalization into real-world settings.

  • A team member will follow up to learn more about your child and answer your questions. If group seems like a fit, we’ll schedule a free discovery call with a clinician to discuss next steps.
